What a peptide actually is
A peptide is a short chain of amino acids, the same building blocks that make up proteins. The difference is length. Proteins are long chains, peptides are short ones. Because they are small and specific, peptides are studied across a wide range of laboratory research.
In the research compound market, peptides are sold as freeze dried powder in sealed vials and are handled as research materials, not as finished consumer products.
The current US regulatory picture
The rules around peptides in the United States are shifting, and it is worth knowing where things stand rather than guessing.
In 2023, the US Food and Drug Administration placed BPC-157 and around a dozen other peptides in its Category 2 bulk substances list under Section 503A, which in practice told compounding pharmacies to stop preparing them. The FDA cited concerns about immunogenicity, possible impurities, and limited human safety data. In 2026 the picture shifted again. In April 2026 the FDA removed BPC-157 and several other peptides from that Category 2 list, and its Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee was scheduled to meet on 23 and 24 July 2026 to review whether a group of peptides, including BPC-157 and TB-500, should be added to the approved 503A compounding list.
The short version is that peptides occupy a gray area that is actively under review. Anyone working with them should treat the legal status as unsettled and follow the laws that apply where they are.
Why purity is the whole game
Here is the uncomfortable truth about the peptide market. The label is the easiest part to fake, and a lot of sellers fake it.
The independent lab Janoshik Analytical reported that around 43 percent of the peptides it tested in 2024 did not meet their stated purity. Products advertised at 99 percent or higher were measured as low as 71 to 91 percent. That gap is not a rounding error. It is the difference between what was sold and what was actually in the vial.
For a researcher, impure material is a ruined result. You cannot trust an experiment when you cannot trust the inputs. That is why purity testing is not a marketing extra here. It is the only proof that the compound is what the label claims.
How to verify a research peptide
You can check the quality of a peptide without any lab equipment of your own. You read the report.
- Identity is confirmed by mass spectrometry, which reads the molecular fingerprint and confirms the compound is what it says.
- Purity is measured by HPLC and reported as a real percentage, for example 98.7 percent.
- Batch specific is the key phrase. The report has to match the exact batch you are buying, with a lot number and a recent test date. A generic report tells you nothing.
- Independent matters most. A report from a third party lab carries weight that a seller’s own numbers cannot.
If a peptide does not come with a batch specific report from an independent laboratory, treat the purity claim as unverified.
